Easter Activities for the Whole Family

Easter is right around the corner, and honestly? You’re probably a little sick of the same old egg-dyeing traditions, right? We get it. As dentists, we’re a little worried about the amount of candy that children eat around this holiday, and we’d rather not provide you with a list of sweets and candies for your little ones to celebrate with. Instead, here are some fun activities that are Easter-centric, family friendly, and better for their teeth to do around Easter this year!

6 Easter Activities for 2018 Visit Color Me Mine

One of the coolest activities Utah has to offer is Color Me Mine. Never heard of it? Check out their website, and visit one of their four Utah locations. You can bring the whole family and have fun painting Easter themed pottery with designs such as eggs, bunnies, or anything else! Pick up your pieces a week later and enjoy your family’s artwork for years to come!’

Dye Eggs a Different Way

Instead of coloring eggs like you always do, consider making deviled eggs, with a twist. After you’ve boiled your eggs and separated the whites from the yolks, allow the whites to sit in colored water for a few minutes before completing the recipe. A cute alternative that your children can help with, and is much better for their teeth and health! Check out All Recipes for the complete recipe.

Visit the Thanksgiving Point Ashton Gardens

Easter is all about spring, sunshine, and being with your families. That’s why we love the Ashton Gardens at Thanksgiving Point. Here you can enjoy beautiful gardens, the Tulip Festival, and allow your children to get some excellent exploring in. We should also mention that this is a great location for any Easter photo shoots you’d like to accomplish!

Make Something Sweet

Even though we’re trying to avoid eating too many sweets, we figured this recipe from SugarHero would be an excellent alternative to candy. You’ll still get your sugar craving though, because this entire “pizza” is made of fruit! It’s both beautiful and satisfying, and you can let your little superheroes run wild with the design. Copy SugarHero’s striped pattern, or ask your children to create a picture. Then enjoy your pizza on Easter Sunday with a picnic!

Invite Some Fairies Over

Another great DIY you can include the whole family with is creating a fairy house for your yard or garden. What a great way to welcome both spring and Easter! As you build your fairy house, just remember to remind your little ones to be very careful and patient so as to not break or hinder the house! You can follow this step-by-step from wikiHow to create your new house! Also, this DIY could easily be modified to welcome some Easter bunnies if that’s a little more relevant for the holiday.

Attend Easter Eggstreme

You can’t have Easter without the classic egg hunt. Luckily for you, Utah has many taking place across the valley! Check out the Easter Eggstreme on March 31st at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi this year. Instead of just candy in those precious eggs, your children will enjoy small prizes and other goodies! They will also be able to meet the Easter bunny this day, so make sure you sign up soon!

After-Holiday Care

We hope that you and your family have an excellent Easter this year, and that you get to spend quality time together, as well as get outside! We also hope these activity ideas have given you some good go-to’s for your Easter celebrations. However, afterward you’ll likely need to do some extra teeth care. Despite your best efforts to avoid too much sugar consumption, it’s likely that your little ones still ate a few too many sweets. So make sure you come on into your nearest Burg office for a checkup.

We are happy to welcome your superheroes to any of our offices and do everything we can to help them feel comfortable and have fun! If you’d like to schedule your post-Easter checkup now, just go ahead and call us at any of our locations here.

5 Healthy Foods That Aren’t Good For Your Teeth

Many foods that are touted as “healthy” are not-so-healthy for your little one’s smile. Excess sugar and unhealthy fat lurks in many unsuspecting foods. Sugar sticks to your child’s teeth and causes tooth decay.

Raw veggies, for example, are generally good for you – until you dunk them in a bowl of dressing with high fat content. Fruit juice sounds healthy in theory – until sugars and syrup are added.

Practicing moderation is important to proper overall nutrition and dental health – especially when it comes to the following foods.

Trail Mix

Trail mix can be a healthy alternative to sweet and salty snacks such as chips and cookies, but be careful when selecting trail mix. Look at the sugar content on the label when determining which trail mix to give your child. A simple alternative is to make your own healthy snack mix at home. Good news – you don’t have to sacrifice flavor for health! Try this tasty recipe that even the kids will love.

Dried Fruit

Dried fruit is often found in trail mixes and can be purchased as an on-the-go snack. Because the water content has been removed from the fruit, you actually consume more fruit than you would if the fruit was in its original form. Many dried fruits you find on the shelves contain loads of refined sugars and hydrogenated oils to increase their shelf life.

Key takeaway – if your dried fruit contains more than just fruit, it’s best to leave it on the shelf and opt for fresh or dried with less/no sugar!

Granola

Like many of the foods we’ve already mentioned, granola can be healthy, but many granolas you find at the grocery store are packed with sugar, sugar substitutes, vegetable oil, and butter. You can create a tasty, healthy granola at home by using dry oats, unsalted nuts of your choice, cinnamon, and egg whites.

Yogurt

Yogurt typically serves as a healthy dairy treat and a probiotic, which is good for digestive health. However, many of the yogurts you see in the dairy aisle are loaded with dyes and loads of sugar. Yogurt contains lactose, which is a form of natural sugar found in milk, but many yogurts contain added sugar, as well. Food Network advises you to skip it if there are too many unpronounceable ingredients.

Smoothies

Because smoothies are made entirely from fruit, they have the potential to be full of sugar. With the right combination of fruits and vegetables, smoothies can be a source of fuel and nutrients. Choose fruits that have a lower sugar content and opt for water instead of coconut water or orange juice.

Ask your pediatric dentist

If you are concerned about your child’s diet, talk to your trusted pediatric dentist. They can help you make healthier choices for your little one. Contact us today at our Cotswold, Gastonia, Waverly, Davidson, or University locations to discuss better oral health for your child!

To All You Millennials Out There: Pick Up That Toothbrush!

post thumbnail

Millennials—loosely defined as the group of people who are reaching adulthood in the early 21st Century—have a lot going for them. Soon to surpass baby boomers as the largest living adult generation, they're poised to have an immense effect on our economy…and a big hand in shaping our future. But there's one thing that's not so great about this generation: their oral hygiene habits.

A recent survey of 2,000 millennials found that three in ten brush their teeth only once a day.  Not only that, but many go without brushing for over two days at a time. And despite that fact that 56 % are concerned about losing their teeth, the survey showed that over half were afraid of going to see the dentist.

What's wrong with this picture? First of all, let's point out that the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, and flossing once a day, to keep your oral health in good shape. Proper brushing and flossing is the most effective way to rid your teeth of plaque: the buildup of food particles and harmful bacteria that cause tooth decay and gum disease. Brushing and flossing are the two most important things you can do at home to maintain good oral hygiene—and having good oral hygiene is the best way you can help keep your natural teeth healthy and sound for your whole life.

But even if you're careful to brush and floss as recommended, you still need to see your dentist for regular checkups. That's because it's almost impossible to completely remove harmful plaque from all tooth surfaces—especially in between teeth and under the gums. Left alone, sticky plaque hardens into tartar, a mineralized deposit that can't be removed at home. A dental professional, however, can effectively remove stubborn plaque during a routine office visit.

What's more, at a regular dental checkup you'll get a full teeth cleaning and a complete evaluation of your oral health, including screening for oral cancer and other potentially serious diseases. These conditions are uncommon…but untreated tooth decay is prevalent among millennials, affecting one in three people ages 18 to 34. When decay bacteria are left alone they can cause further problems in teeth and gums, and eventually lead to tooth loss.

Missing teeth and other dental issues can cause problems that aren't just "skin deep." A 2017 survey by the ADA found that 28% of young adults say the appearance of their teeth and mouth hurts their job prospects, and 38% find their lives are "less satisfying" due to oral problems. That's two more reasons not to put off a routine visit to your dentist!

Molar Man and Crew Help Flood Victims

Check out the latest release from Burg’s newspaper the Dental Times!

Molar Man and Crew Help Flood Victims! Our favorite superheroes helped us recover after a nasty soda flood!

Not everything was sunny in Dental Heights last Thursday when a flash flood of diet soda poured through the town! No idea where the torrent of sugar and bubbles came from, citizens were caught unawares in their homes and jobs. The flood wreaked havoc on the town, and teeth could be seen in every direction helping each other or running for their lives. The flood lasted for only a few minutes, but the devastation it caused is going to require cleanup for many days, if not months without the proper tools. Among the damaged was Teeth Hall, though Mayor Mouthwash is reportedly okay, Dental Heights Library, and many citizens’ homes. Lucky for Dental Heights, we have some benevolent superheroes on our side. Not only Molarman, but his friends the Bristler, Dr. Diet, Incisor Girl, Flosser, Agent Fluoride, and even Sgt. Sealant all came to help with repairs!

These benevolent supers showed up immediately following the flood and were able to begin helping the citizens of Dental Heights fix their homes, clean the sticky substance off of themselves and their property, and even clean the streets! Molar Man was seen using his hyper brushing to power clean buildings, and his super strength to move some of the heavier things. Other superheroes such as the Bristler used his paste punch to really help bring out that shine in many of our citizen’s lives. Mayor Mouthwash supervised the progress to ensure everyone was taken care of, and that we got our shining city back to its former glory. Citizens’ main concern now is any lasting damage. We understand that if the diet soda had been allowed to remain in the city it would have begun wearing down buildings, streets, and even us! Molar Man was kind enough to inform us of what diet soda could potentially do including cavities, decay, and just general unpleasantness. We are always so grateful for our local superheroes, without whom we would all be sticky and messy for days!
